Resources Competition

This unique "Resources Competition" has been running since October 2019. Each month you are required to leave your idea or ideas on the special "Comments" page on how you would use this resource. (Click here to see the current competition) At the end of each competition a winner is drawn out of a hat and given this resource.

Below are previous winners and contributors to this competition - many of the ideas listed will be of value to Teachers of the Deaf.

Previous winners and contibutors.
Competition Number Four (April - June 2020) - Winner Kiah Hall

Kiah was very excited to receive her prize and demonstrates how she is using the resource for developing audition and listening.
* Kiah is using a barrier game to develop an 8 key word/item memory task through listening.
* The student listens to the direction e.g. “Place a blue elephant at the top, left corner, facing towards the river”.
* The resource of colourful animals is great for developing anything between a 1 item to 12 item memory.
* The student then has the opportunity to provide an instruction to Kiah, giving Kiah the opportunity to listen to and support the students expressive construction of the sentence

Competition Number Four (April - June 2020) - Contributors
Picture
Roz Davies - Great activity for little ones. Teaching names of animals, colours, groups. Could also do Following instructions activities

Kiah Hall - this would be a great resource to use in a barrier game to provide opportunity to develop receptive and expressive language skills. I would create two identical scenes for each player and use the set of animals to position in the scene and have the other player follow instructions to create a matching scene. You could increase the difficulty by giving multi-step instructions.
Competition Number Three (February - March 2020) - Winner Leonie Holder
Picture
Roz Davies - This is a fabulous resource to get students asking questions? Can be specific and make them "yes/ no" questions only. It helps to teach students about categories, and grouping. How to narrow down your questioning. Can enhance their language with adjectives and descriptive phrases. And most of all it is hilarious fun.

Leonie Holder - A great game for developing auditory/working memory- getting students to listen to clues that they need to piece together to work out who they are. Clues can become more complex based on the language level of the child.

Competition Number Two (December 2019/January 2020) - Winner Leonie Holder
Picture
Leonie Holder - I would use these bean bags as a fun way to determine the critical listening distance of a child. They could toss the beanbag into a bucket, or at corresponding images, when the Ling sounds are detected.

Please note - if you submitted an idea for the bean bags would you please re-send the idea to [email protected] so that we can include it in the list of ideas - these comments were deleted when "Competition 3" was put on the web page. Thanks

Competition Number One (October/November 2019) - Winner Kerry Mayers
Picture
Clare Quirk - I would use it to teach counting, patterns, colours, turn-taking, prediction, and theory     of mind skills.

Bron Birch - This is a great resource to use at the end of a lesson as postive reinforcement as it is quick and fun to play.      As a teacher we are assessing the students' thinking/strategy process when playing Connect 4. As Claire said above,
playing this game also is a good Theory of Mind activity.

Roslyn Davies - A great game for end of session reward.. it is quick and small / travel size - great for VT's. as mentioned - great for thinking strategies, language activities.

Kerry Mayers - This game could be used to incorporate vocab targets or /speech/listening sounds. Student chooses cards to say/produce/listen to, and the colour of the counter underneath (placed randomly under each card before the game) determines whose turn is next.
